I give this robot building kit an enthusiastic 4.75 stars! I had no idea what to expect when I ordered it. I'm not familiar with UBTECH, Jimu, or robotics in general. But I am a mother of three kids whom I homeschool and so I jump at the opportunity to add experiences like this to our curricul
um. Plus, it looked cool, whatever this set was. Plus...the price said it's either something really impressive or crazy. So it arrived in a really impressive box that opens like a book. Inside is almost like a cupboard or dresser with drawers for different components. There is a drawer-box for connectors, for parts, for wires, etc. Helps keep things organized, because this is important with these Jimu things! The package is well designed and very intuitive. EXCEPT it doesn't have a smart guide or help for knowing how to charge the battery, but I'll get back to that in a minute.First thing you need to do is download the app. Once you have the app, you can choose which robot you'd like to built. (Or you can build your own, but I don't recommend starting that way! Abort! Abort!) Choose which robot you'd like to build, I chose the humanoid to start, and the app takes you step-by-step through each component, giving you a visual you can look at 360 degrees via the app. It helps that you can turn and look at the pieces on the app to get an idea of how to attach them in real life. The first limb was a bit confusing, it took me a bit to get my bearings, but once I did the first limb and learned how these things attach to each other, the rest became easier. This kit says it's for kids 8+, and I'd say the average 8-year-old (non-savant kids) are going to need a little help maybe. I am extremely brain dead on my left side of the brain, so it was an interesting experience. My kids (8, 5, & 3) "helped." Not really. They went to bed and I spent a good two hours finishing the rest of the robot: one more leg, two arms, and the body/head. I had fun doing it! (And wine. Wine helped.)Basically you start with a "servo" and build from there. Limb by limb until you have those done and attach them to the control box. As I said, this kit does NOT come with clear instructions as to how to charge the battery and we had issues there. I almost issued this product a 1 star review! I ended up doing what the app told me to do, which was to just build the robot humanoid bit by bit. Then I got to the finishing line and thought, "Now what?"I flipped the on-off switch and pulled up the app...nothing happened. I found the charger in the kid and plugged it into the control box and it flashed between green and yellow which I thought meant it was charging...But a couple hours later it still didn't power on. No go. I went to bed disappointed, woke up disappointed. I worked hours on my humanoid robot and it LOOKED impressive and the limbs make cool robot noises when I moved them, and it felt heavy and large and I wanted to see what it could do sooo badly. But no power. It wouldn't charge. So I waited for my husband to come home from work the next day, because he was that kid who gave his parents headaches by taking apart everything (the Nintendo, the phone, the VCR) as a kid to see how it worked and then put it back together. My husband concluded that the light flashing green and red meant something was wrong and that it wasn't really charging. I was still so disappointed, I even read another review online about the batteries not working. ALL THIS FOR A LEMON BATTERY!? We took the battery out, we disconnected wires, we fiddled with it. Then, he pressed on the battery pack, pushing the battery firmly. And just like that, the light turned solid red. It was finally charging.I waited until it was charged 30%. I couldn't wait any longer. I unplugged it, grabbed my smart phone, and connected the robot via bluetooth. At this point it took some tweaking. I'd attached a servo to servo backward so my robot humanoid wanted to act like a Rockette. Also...hehe...I put the legs on the wrong side (look, it was like midnight when I was attaching the legs, and wine, remember?) The app does a decent job of telling you when you have something in the wrong place. Stop, be patient, investigate. It will work out. A couple adjustments, and my robot was ready to go!OH BOY! Was this fun or what?! It does backflips!!! Using the app, I could have the robot go through actions, such as dancing or moving left/right. The "get down" on the floor action looks impressively just like a toddler's tantrum. Then you can sequence the actions, so I made him do a little dance (featured in the video!) Then, on top of that, you can design your own movements for your robot. This involves coding by programming each individual servo (there's about 3 per limb!) to move in certain ways.Yeah... that's too complicated for this right brained mama. But I'm excited for my kids and husband to hopefully play with the programming mode in the future, when they get the hang of this thing. Here's the pointers I have:- Go slow building, this is not for newbies. The app walks you through step by step, and you can easily skip forward or go back to make sure you did the right thing.- Keep the pieces organized! There is a LOT to this kit, lots of little pieces.- It's overwhelming at first, but once you see how pieces attach and come together, it's pretty impressive, intuitive, and well designed.- While you build, charge the battery pack, make sure the light is solid red. Blinking green-red isn't charging.- When attaching pieces, press together hard enough until you hear a "click" I learned this the hard way, a servo kept falling off another one because I wasn't clicking it in place (which led to the backward leg issue I mentioned)- Keep servos straight! They are numbered with little silver stickers. Servo 01-15, each one is individual and mixing them up during building results in mayhem.- This set is not for beginners. It's an impressive, advanced robot building kit!- Know that there is not great online support (yet). During the battery charging issue, I found next to nothing as far as online help. However, there is an email address on the bottom of the box for UBTECH. I would have called them if we hadn't sorted out the battery issue.Any questions, feel free to leave a comment! Overall I think this is a REALLY COOL kit, but not for the faint of heart. It's an impressive set, well designed, fun, but complicated. My only qualms were the battery charging issue, the lack of instructions for charging, and the current lack of online support for such a complex product.I am still way too intimidated to even consider building my own robot. But I'll have fun breaking down the humanoid and trying to build the elephant or wolf next!
