原文:I needed a comfortable daily backpack that could fit multiple needs from work/laptop gear, to camera gear, to my weekly day hikes with my dog. While this almost fulfills all of these things, the Osprey Pandion falls short in quality in nearly every category compared to other cheaper packs. This is
essentially the equivalent to any other backpack you can grab at Walmart for $30-$50, but has some spandex pockets sewn on, the mesh back, and a kickstand.I also want to add that I did a TON of research to find the best Osprey back for my needs and this is what I ended up with. Something else to note (if anyone is wondering) is that this is almost the exact same thing as the Nebula, but doesn't have the middle compartment.v-v-v-v-v---Old bag details and new needs---v-v-v-v-vI've been using the same Astro Gaming MLG Scout backpack ($99 in 2009) since college and now for work (7 years) and that backpack is the best i've ever owned. I also own one of Jansport's day-hiking packs ($50-$60 in 2012 not to be confused with the cheap modern school bags) that's about the same height and price but expands to be quite a bit bigger. Currently I use one of the Sea to Summit ultralight daypacks ($50) for day-hikes. That's not including my Granite Gear 55L which is irrelevant here as it's for camping trips.Problems:- The Jansport is way too bulky for my taste and isn't aesthetically pleasing for work (ugly green).- My daypack is too small and fragile to safely hold my camera gear when I hike, not to mention it doesn't accommodate a water bladder. It compacts into the size of a fist, so protection isn't expected.- The Astro was built to hold an Xbox, controllers, games, etc. and nothing else, so it's not ideal as the slot I put the laptop in is meant for the thickness of an Xbox and not a laptop. Also too compact to hold my camera gear and I would never take it on a day hike. Other than that, the quality, size, security, etc. is what I wanted out of my new pack.v-v-v-v-v---Pandion Details---v-v-v-v-vPros:- Looks cool and has the Osprey logo, therefore making me *feel* cool- Tight laptop compartment. Compared to the gaming bag, my laptop actually holds tight and I use the tablet slot for my organizer.- Plenty of space for storage, even for an overnight or two. Compared to the Osprey Nebula that has the middle compartment, the "large space" for storage is shared with the main compartment with the laptop slot. I was incredibly worried my 5in wide camera insert wouldn't fit, but it fits snuggly (almost too snug) if the pack is expanded fully. I imagine even with my camera insert that stands about 5 in high, I could still fit in a couple of days of clothes and basic toiletries.Cons:- Uncomfortable: I can't believe it, but this pack just isn't comfortable. The straps are thinner and aren't as soft as my gaming backpack or even the Jansport. It also sits a little odd on my lower back thanks to the kickstand. Literally, all 4 of my bags mentioned are more comfortable. The shoulder straps are not near what I expected and are lesser quality than the Jansport and Astro. The chest/hip straps are standard 1in nylon that you get on pretty much any backpack that has them.- Poor Quality for price: Everything feels cheap/thin - With it being a hiking bag that holds a computer and tablet, I expected everything inside to be thick and soft/absorbant, but my gaming bag i've used daily for 7 years still is thicker/softer and more protective than this. The pockets sewn to the inside are paper thin and have absolutely no protection at all should you want to put a phone or anything important in them. Even the laptop sleeve only has about half a centimeter of thickness and bounces off the mesh on your back.- Mesh ended up being a con: While the raised mesh is cool and all for the heat (pun intended), It takes away from the comfort of a nice soft foam snug to your back. The pack essentially floats an inch or so off the mesh. Worst of all, and this may be a deal breaker, is that if you bounce (say hopping up or down a step), your back stretches the mesh and hits the back of the pack, which hits your laptop, considering there's maybe half a centimeter of padding. I honestly can't believe they thought adding the mesh made it acceptable to have such a thin back. I will likely purchase a neoprene laptop sleeve to go with this.- Bigger than expected: I was essentially expecting a similar portfolio size as my gaming bag, but the kickstand defeats any idea of a compact look. It's in between my large Jansport and the gaming bag in terms of bulkiness. Super glad I did not get the Nebula. It is also about 4-5 inches taller than my Astro bag.- Access: To access the main compartment with laptop, you have to unbuckle 2 buckles and uncover the zipper. The front compartment also has to be unbuckled and the sunglasses compartment has to be uncovered too. This seems petty but makes a noticable difference when you're used to just unzipping whenver you want. Another huge con for me is that the main compartment doesn't unzip far enough. The zipper is approx. 11 inches from the bottom of the bag, so it's really difficult to get into anything at the bottom considering the rest of the bag is so tight. The front compartment unzips about 2-3 inches further, but has less space, so is still difficult to access anything lying in the bottom. Also, because of the overlapping of the main compartment zip, it covers the laptop/tablet compartment making your laptop rub against the zipper anytime you add/remove it. If this was water resistant, some of these details would be pros, but its not.All-in-all, you can get a Jansport of equal or better quality for half the price. This is my first Osprey and was a significant purchase for me after using the same daily bag for so long. I'm super bummed. I really hope not all Osprey is getting away with this.
