dude. These pants zip off just above the knee. They are perfect for autumn and spring backpacking trips, and I believe they would be great the other months of the year also. I'll be wearing them even in the summer since they are so light and will give me mosquito protection in the summer without being too hot.Update: I had originally ordered 34x34 because that is my pant size. I have to return those and get the 36x34. The 34x34 pants seemed to fit well, but they were just a little snug which caused the crotch area to be too tight whenever I squatted. I would advise getting one waist higher. These are still awesome pants, though.Update 2:I wore these on a four hour hike today and they were very comfortable. I took the pant legs off before I hit the trail. The pants were very flexible and breathed well. The only slight issue I had with them was the right cargo pocket. It has a small piece of Velcro on it and by the end of the day it didn't seem to want to stick after my sweat got it wet. Minor issue in my mind, though. The left cargo pocket has a zipper on it. Not sure why the right doesn't also.One other thing I like about these pants. The lower pant legs have an L and an R stamped on them so you don't have to guess about which one is which.

p stairs (or climbing a hilly incline) when you have to lift your feet higher in order to ascend vertically.. these are the steps when the fabric of any pant will rub and catch most on your moist, sweaty legs.. in the context of a day-long hiking, it makes each step that much more tiring when you have to fight against your pants; in the context of these pants that problem is even worse as they get so thigh-narrow they maximize that pull... and I have normal-dude thighs.. I haven't seen leg day in the gym for years...Moving on, you figure one design flaw is enough, yea? Oh wait, how about those front pockets, lets make those smaller, because no one takes front pockets seriously anyways, yea? I stuck a ruler in the front pockets and couldn't find any way to put it deeper than 4 and 1/2". I can still see my wrist when I put my hands in those pockets.. why.... would they do that?..if you can get over the tight thighs (I couldn't) then perhaps the only merit to these pants is how light the nylon is compared to other convertible pants.. so maybe they'll stay cooler in hot climates.. just too uncomfortable for me to try and find out

如果你可以忍受腿部的紧缩（反正我忍不了），这裤子的唯一优点可能就是，和其他户外裤比起来这裤子轻得多，在炎热天气穿着也会更凉爽....不过对于我来说，我还是觉得不舒服，不想穿这条裤子。

I'm about 5'6' so I have to get this pants hemmed or they drag on the floor.Anyways I love this product and wouldn't mind buying it again if the old ones break. I primarily use this for travel since I travel light and never check anything in. I use this for the shorts function and I utilize it for a business casual type of look. 原文：I really wanted to love these pants. I bought these for use in backpacking because I understood them to be good pants for that purpose. Lightweight, breathable fabric, easy conversion to shorts, the (usually) reputable Columbia name. Here is what happened: as described, these pants ride *below* the
hip. Hip-huggers, sort of. And for pretty much all forms of exercise, I wear boxer briefs and have done so for years. Well, wearing these Columbia pants with my normal backpacking pack caused the following scenario - there was a large gap where my underwear rode up over the top of the pants. The belt of the Columbia pants themselves was probably cutting into my hip bones. And then the thicker, padded belt of my pack (an Arcteryx Bora 80 pack that I have owned and used since about 2002 with no problems whastoever) ended up with some kind of friction and abrasion against both my underwear and my bare skin, resulting in the gory, ghastly wounds on my hips. I tried to attach pics to this review but apparently Amazon finds them inappropriate, so that is saying something! I've never seen anything like these wounds in all my years of hiking or backpacking and am very inclined to return these pants. I treated myself with gauze bandages in duct tape while still in the wilderness and continued changing bandages for the next five days. Perhaps my fellow lovers of the outdoors can advise me if I ought to order a size larger or smaller? Although they are a bit snug, they seemed to fit me just fine and allowed for a full range of movement even with a heavy pack on. I am actually scared to try these again in a backpacking scenario, and would not have ordered them just to have a nice pair of hiking pants. So any advice is welcome.
