The new case isn't attractive for me but it should have little effect on use.BOTTOM LINE (for the impatient):The new model is a little bit faster than the last one I got a couple of years ago. It's faster than a similar My Passport drive, perhaps an advantage with the physically larger drive. This model (I got the 6TB size) is available in sizes up to 8TB. A pretty massive amount of storage on a USB drive! This drive shines with sequential reads and writes using Crystal DiskMark.This My Book has a new design that replaces rounded corners with pointy ones and adds some odd (to me) styling to the case. The new case shows fingerprints and scratches much more than the old. It's a purely aesthetic change.If these differences are not important for you or you prefer the old model's aesthetics, you may want to shop for the older model My Book.If you want more details, read on...SUMMARY:The My Book USB 3.0 drives are simple to use and come with reasonable software tools and backup/sync software. The drive includes: WD Backup, WD Security and WD Drive Utilities. I have my own backup solution and have not explored this software. If these are of interest, be sure to check for newer versions on the WD web site.Pluses:+ This drive works fine with Windows, Linux or Mac out of the box. With Linux or Mac it performs best when reformatted with a native file system for the respective operating system.+ This generation has 8TB, 6TB, 4TB and 3TB single drive models. Dual drive 12TB and 16TB models are available too.+ This drive is faster than the last generation I used. Just noticeable in practical use.+ The form factor of the new drive is almost exactly the same as before except for pointy corners.+ It comes with a 4ft USB 3.0 cable (much nicer than the very short My Passport cables!)Minuses:- A power adapter is required. Happily it has a 6ft cord which is thoughtfully long.- The redesign of the drive case is not a plus for me. Not much of a minus either as it's not why I selected this drive. The worst thing is going with pointy corners. From a handling perspective rounded corners are nicer.- The warranty has been reduced from 3 years for last year's model to 2 years for this one.IN THE BOX:The My Book comes in a easy to open retail package containing the drive, power adapter and USB 3.0 cable. There are a couple small pieces of paper for warranty and quick-start. That's it.TESTING:I tested My Book 6TB model using CrystalDiskMark benchmark software and by copying 11GB folder of updates and files to the drive. This was to compare the benchmark with real-world copying. The 11GB folder has a broad mix of file sizes and types including files an over 2GB iso DVD images.For my testing the My Book drive was connected to the Renasas USB 3.0 chip set on my Dell Precision E6500 laptop. I have the latest Renasas drivers installed. More on the writing than reading side. It peaked out at about 300MB/s with large files. It never dropped below 180MB/s even with large amounts of small files being copied to the drive.The newer drive may have a larger on-drive write cache or maybe it's just a bit faster drive. Maybe both. With big copies the new My Book may save you a few seconds here or there, but it's an evolution across models with each new one performing a little better.CONCLUSIONS:The My Book line of drives from Western Digital has been very good over the years to me and to my clients. This reliable and good to excellent performing line has a long positive history with me.This WD My Book model is an evolution over the older models I've used. I'll pick it for new purchases over the older model, but won't rush out to replace older drives. The new case design is not aesthetically pleasing to me . Overall it's a excellent successor to a 5 star predecessor and continues to be a very good external storage choice.For making improvements that outweigh a small misstep in case design and not making a mess of something that has been working well for a long time This new generation of My Book drives is worth 5 stars in my opinion.Hope this helps someone!UPDATE: 22-Oct-2017:It's been a year+ since I got my drive and it is still working reliably for me as a backup medium for all my media files (music, video, photos). So far so good. I still have not warmed up to the case design, but didn't select this drive on its looks! This remains a 5 star drive in my use.

B to 60mb plus some videos. I did not time it or watch it closely. You can easily play movies or music from this drive without skipping.HEAT: the drive did NOT get hot. Not even very warm while chugging away for almost a whole day relentlessly copying over 5 TB of data. The drive has vents on the 2 ends. You are supposed to put the vent side up, so the heat can exit. That means the drive will be standing on end, which is probably not how you were going to place it. There are rubber feet on the other end. I suspect that the people who said this drive runs hot did not stand the drive up as intended. You can not stack these drives, but you could stand several next to each other.ENCRYPTION: There is NONE. That is GREAT news. I had heard that the drive was married to the case by hardware encryption. Without getting in to the reasons why that is a terrible idea, I'll just say that we don't have to talk about encryption here, because there is isn't any and that is fine. Before doing anything else, we reformatted as HFS+ for Mac, then copied over 5 TB of data.I can tell you that if you remove the drive from the plastic case and pop it into a SATA "toaster" or other external sata case it works. The data is still there and useful. Yay! There are a lot of reviews saying that the drive will not work if removed from the case (unless reformatted), but I'm telling you it does work & all data is preserved. Maybe they did not reformat before starting a or maybe they have the dual-drive raid version. This means that if the case ever fails, you CAN put the drive into a different case & run with it as is. Great news!NOISE: there is some vibration when the drive is running. A very low hum. It may or may not bother you There is no fan. The case has rubber mounts & rubber feet which help dampen the vibration. There is some minor vibration while running in the factory case, and also when running in a NewerTech "toaster". Neither vibrations are objectionable unless maybe you are in a recording studio.CONNECTOR: USB 3 micro B. Just one.POWER ADAPTER: is rated at 12v dc 1.5 A. Does not block multiple outlets in use, but it does protrude to the side. There may be a ferrite bead around the cord, near the end.WHATS INSIDE THE PACKAGE: The drive, a warranty statement, USB to USB 3 micro b cable and power cable. Some packaging and a Need Help? card directing you to support.wd.com/contact No software is included, unless it was on the drive, which came formatted as ExFAT, but we reformatted it to HFS+ which is normal for Mac.NO ACTIVITY LIGHT: I can hardly believe WD cheaped out by not providing an activity light. Weird, I wish it had one, but for the price/performance I'm not going to change my rating.NO POWER SWITCH. No big deal. There is a wall-wart which isn't that bad. Does not hog more than 1 power outlet.WHAT"S INSIDE the case: a single 8 TB WD drive (128MB cache) and a small triangular SATA to USB 3 board. (opening the plastic case is tricky! See how to on youtube & make sure you are looking at late 2016 or after. the case tabs are U shaped, pointing back at you. Very unusual & you are certain to break some tabs off. There are 3 tabs on one side, and 2 tabs on the other side of the same end. The feet end does not have actual tabs. Several credit cards, then Torx 10 and Phillips 2). Drive has a large white sticker. Model WD80EZZX. Rated at 5V 440mA, 12V 550mA DC. No jumper pins and no place for them. The bare drive feels pretty heavy compared to lower capacity drives. No software was included unless it was on the disk, which we ignored and reformatted for Mac.All in all, I'm happy with this drive so far. At current price it is a real value and seems faster than a 'back up drive'. I'll update this review if my opinion changes, but this 8TB single drive is a Buy.
