Honestly, it really isn't too bad. I washed the brushes right away with a brush shampoo and the smell went away. If you've ever ordered s
omething that was delivered in plastic, it's the same smell. Nothing as dramatic as what some have put down.Second- washing. I immediately decided to wash these before I gifted them as soon as I put in the order. If the smell didn't come out, if it didn't retain shape or shed, it was getting returned. And honestly all the brushes held up well. Only one brush shed a tiny bit, nothing out of the ordinary. And they all retained the shape after drying out, which is a big win.Third- quality. Now obviously I can't speak to long term wear or use, which is why I will only give this 4 stars. But I will say that the brush in hand feels great. They are thick and feel weighty-- something I like in a brush. I can definitely keep a good grip. And the brush bristles are densely packed where they should be, so that's also a plus.I can't say I opened the sponge-- I wanted to keep it away from bacteria for my friend and preserve as much of the packaging as possible. But I pressed on it from within its plastic and I can say that it's super soft and snaps into shape quickly.And I think the company has listened to reviews on here because they included an info card about the brushes. Some reviews said they didn't get one.
