Convinced that I needed to try the health benefits, not to mention the unique taste, of marmite, I ordered this with a mixture of excitement and trepidation. Somehow I managed to reassure myself that when it came, I would instantly love
the taste--after all, I'm an adventurous eater! It was not, though, love at first sight. The consistency was gluey and the taste was like a mixture of miso paste and old mushrooms. However, having invested in it, I pressed on. I took the advice of my brother, an experienced marmite eater, and started off with very small quantities, mixed with peanut butter (non-Americans are probably groaning and rolling their eyes at this). At first it was tough to get down even a tiny dollop, but I persevered, encouraged by the obvious "B vitamin rush" I felt after ingesting it. And now, lo and behold, a month later and I'm slathering on larger and larger quantities, and licking the knife clean when I'm done. So it is true that you can acquire a taste for it.
A note: I got both marmite and vegemite. The texture of the marmite is stickier and more difficult to work with, but it has B12 in it, which the vegemite I got doesn't. The taste is similar, although not identical.
