There are 2 elements to this review of the Nimbus 19. The first concentrates on fit and sizing (poor, and a constant frustration with Asics), and the other on the feel of the shoe (materials, cushioning etc) which gets 2 thumbs way up .
I just don't understand the thinking of the designe
rs at Asics. You would think that they would understand that, even if you continue to strive towards improving the performance of a particular model, you would appreciate that (i) people who bought and liked the previous shoe would be your most obvious purchasers of new models and (ii) you are designing for the same size and type of foot.
Why is it then that the main issues that I am having with model changes is with the actual fit and size of the shoe?
I have worn a size 6 for years, including in Asics. I started with the Cumulus 12, then 13, then the 15"s in both Cumulus and Nimbus. I loved them both and continued to buy them until I could no longer find them in my size. I then bought the Cumulus 16"s, which were horrendous in many ways, but most noticeably, they were "short" in the toe box. The next option was the Nimbus 17 which was ok, although the toebox was a bit narrow and on very long runs my toes would start to feel uncomfortable. I then decided to try the Nimbus 18, but bought a 1/2 size up based on all the reviews, which fit fine. Wasn't in love with the shoe though, so when the Nimbus 19 came out, I decided to switch. Having bought 1/2 size up again, the shoe is AGAIN TOO SMALL. The cut of the front of the shoe is almost in a V shape, and so the toes rub against the side. I do run in them, but use them for shorter runs and switch to shoes with a more roomy toebox for the longer runs,
What I will say though, and why I have given 4 stars, is that other than the sizing issue, the shoe otherwise feels awesome!. The shoe is is somehow both much lighter and the tread even more cushioned than previous models. In effect, it feels like a heavily cushioned "light" trainer and is much more suited to speedwork. So as annoyed as I am with the sizing problem, I will grudgingly buy this shoe again but in a full size up this time.
