Out of all the above here are some of my opinions. Please note that I am not even anywhere close
to being an expert in this field but I really enjoy listening to music of all kinds.

Bose QC3 and QC15: Best noise cancelling technology as you will read on just about every review. The QC15 was especially comfortable and lightweight but both felt cheaply made and seems like they may break easy. The other reason I didn't keep them was I would do a sound test (low volume, then do a max volume) using different kinds of music (electronica, classical, rap, techno, instrumental, acapella, jazz, etc.). Both of them failed on the bass when turned to max, became very distorted and ugly, like broken speakers.

Sennheiser PXC 450: was my favorite as I love the features (mute to talk to people around you, very very very comfortable). I may have received a defective one because with the noise cancelling feature on, it distorts the bass on high volumes, with it off, everything sounds perfect. Nice that it also folds flat in a thin case. Returned because why would I buy a noise cancelling headphone and not use that feature. Also, I tried it inside bus/train/car and when I talk while the music is off but the NC feature on, it does a "motorboating" sound.

AKG K495: The best sounding one and loudest one also. Super cool design with the headphones folding flat, rechargeable battery through USB, cool way to turn on NC (by twisting the headset), and SOUNDS AWESOME! Why didn't I keep it.... it HURTS my ears after 15-20 min. It's an on-the-ear type so it rests on your ear. They said it will get comfortable over time but I tried it everyday for 3 weeks and it didn't feel better. The material is comfortable to the touch but I couldn't get over the pain.

Audio-Technica ANC27, ANC7b, ANC9: Sound-wise, ANC9 blows all of them away. Much better than the 27, better than the 7b. Comfort wise, I can sleep with this on - super soft memory foam around your ears. Nice 3 way NC feature although I almost always use 1st and 2nd settings. ANC9 does not distort on high volumes even on the bass (there's a bass tester on YouTube). Sound is clearer with NC on than off. I love the feature of being able to still use it with the batteries dead unlike the Bose. I normally use it on a train ride but also used it for a flight from SF to NY. Peacefully quiet. You'll still hear a faint distant engine hum but if you take it off, you will see how loud that hum really is! No wonder NC headphones are so popular with the folks that fly often.

My only complaint is I am probably one of the very few unlucky ones who got a bad unit. After exactly 40 days, the left side started to have this slight distorted, motorboating sound. If I shake my head, I can hear clicking on the left ear. With bass heavy music, the left ear gets this slight, but still annoying, distortion. Right side is perfect. The nice folks I bought it from couldn't help me on the return due to it being over 30 days. Too bad and just my luck but I understand. I contacted Audio Technica and this is the best part. You call the number, and a live person answers. She gave me directions on how to send it back (I have to pay for shipping). I called them after a few days they confirmed receipt (live person again!) and said that they already sent me a brand new replacement. Audio Technica's service is great!! They really do back up their products and just made me look for more AT products in the future.

Sorry about the long review but I hope this helps you on your decision. I know my family was going nuts on seeing me with a new headphone almost every week during my search.

But about a year and a half after starting to use them (and always taking great care of them, storing them in the original case whenever I finished using them), probl
ems started, namely, the earpads started bursting, exposing the foam filling within. At first, it wasn't such a big deal, but it gotten worse and worse, and the headphones got less and less comfortable to wear as this process continued.

I looked for replacement pads. There are cheap knock-offs on Amazon with reviews saying they don't isolate sound as well as the original, so that's a no-go, so I looked at the official store: Audio Technica sells replacement pads for a whooping 70GBP (about 87USD)! That's waaaaaaay too much.

So, my verdict is: If you want really good headphones (and don't mind paying a ridiculous amount of money for replacement parts), buy these. But if you want something that will last *more* than two years, maybe these are not the best choice.

Update (2017): The earpads are now starting to fall off the headphones, which makes things even worse. When you buy a pair of expensive headphones like these you expect them to last more than 3 years. These didn't.
