I had owned an RCA RP5430 for about 7 years. Was an excellent alarm clock/radio and was my first encounter with the Nap feature, which I used almost daily... which is why I wanted a replacement, as I finally wore out (broke) the Nap button. With the success and satisfaction I had with the RP5430,
I initially chose to stay with RCA and bought the direct model replacement, the RC142 - however, when it arrived, I noticed that there had been some running changes to the unit (this was now the RC142-C) and one of the things they got rid of from the initial RC142 was the Nap function. No good to me, but I didn't want to chuck the whole thing, so it's now in the guest bedroom.
Prior to the RCA RP5430, I had a Timex Audio clock/radio which was very good for the most part, but rendered obsolete by the change in Daylight Saving Time dates (it had a full calendar, but the manufacturer apologized that it was not upgradeable). At first, I didn't like the current Timex offerings, but then it dawned on me... the 7 years with the RCA, I probably listened to the radio twice, and besides, I have a GE Superadio III that I use from room to room. Without the radio, the Timex T128 met my requirements:
- battery backup
- dual alarm
- programmable snooze timing (I prefer 12 minutes to the standard 9)
- easy-to-read display
- nap function
- simple DST on/off switch
Once it arrived, it took me all of 2 minutes to set it and familiarize myself with the controls. I like the gradual volume increase of the alarm - starts off like a truck backing up a couple of blocks away and gets progressively louder. The snooze button is plenty long enough and in its own row away from the other top-mounted buttons, so it's not difficult to use without looking.
I really have no use for the night light, although I imagine it's nice to have for some. The TIME SET button is a little inconvenient on the back, but hopefully one doesn't have to use it very often.
I've only found two drawbacks compared to the RCA and both involve the nap function (which is why I bought a new clock in the first place, thus the 1 star demerit for the Timex)... the snooze does not work with the nap alarm on the Timex, and there are only a handful of nap times available: 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 45, 60, and 90 minutes - the RCA allowed any value from 10 minutes to 2 hours in 10-minute increments.
Hopefully I can get 7 years out of this unit before I have to worry about buying another alarm clock again.
