is better" mentality. Forum threads quickly devolve into "why do you want crummy small bins when you could spend $$$$ for these awesome huge ones?" (Because I can't run with them!) Plus, you can really fall down the rabbit hole of technical specs. I was using a pair of $10 Tascos that were pretty atrociouscouldn't get worse, really.

My requirements:

1. Small and compact enough to carry securely in one hand. Double-hinged models are ideal for this, as well as for my narrow pupillary distance (small head).
2. Lightweight because I'll be running with them.
3. Clear, bright image. Really, just better than the fuzzy, unfocusable Tascos.
4. 10x since most of my birding is on the waterfront and the birds tend to be pretty far away. Shaky hands aren't a problem for me.
5. Waterproof and fogproof. It's generally wet here in the Pacific Northwest.
6. Under $200. I don't want to freak out if I drop them.

Much forum lurking and comparing later, I was torn between these Bushnells and the Alpen Wings ED 8x20. After reading a detailed forum review about how the Bushnells compared favorably to the user's very pricey Leica compact binoculars, I took the plunge.

Several bird runs later, I can definitely recommend this model. The image is so clear and bright that I can easily ID birds way out on the log booms and buoys. Nice range of view for compact bins. Easy to follow eagles flying overhead. Lightweight and fold up really small to fit in my hand like a handheld water bottleperfect for a running birder. The build feels solid and durable. Focusing is a breeze and doesn't drift out of focus as I run. The fogproof glass is a bonus when running on chilly days and then stopping to check out birds. The cheap bins immediately fogged up, but these do not. Twist-up eyecups are another nice bonus for compact bins.

For what it's worth, I added a life bird to my list on my first run with these: snow bunting!

fantastic. They are obviously not as good in low light as the larger glasses, but in daylight they come very close and low light performance is acceptable...all at less than 1/4th the price. They are SO compact that I'm thinking of buying another pair and leaving the larger ones at home.

binoculars which were really fine binoculars, but I sold them a few years back. I envisioned the Bushnell's might be close to the the previous Leica's for use and viewing, and they seem to be. 10x power and 25mm objectives have an ease of use problem compared to larger objectives, but the advantages are light weight with a small size, and nice for hiking, traveling, and availability. These Legend binoculars give a great view with good light for a 10x25 binocular, and appear to be of the highest quality. The focus is on the objective lens side, and works very smooth. I highly recommend them, and consider the price very reasonable for the quality.

The problem with small binoculars is that they are usually very dim and have poor resolution, unless you want to spend many hundreds of dollars.

These are great. they have a nice heft, smooth, but tight adjustments, and very good image clarity for such small binoculars.

Perfect for what I bought them for.

e last ten years has been something else. The ED optics are amazing. These Bushnells have a very high build quality and optically they are excellent...very sharp and contrasty.

Because they are 10x25s, the exit pupil is only 2.5 mm so you will want to buy these for daylight use. You can fit them in your pocket. They come with a nice case but I wish Bushnell had included a soft pouch and lens caps. Also the neck strap, while nice, is too bulky.

Overall I can highly recommend these Ultras and as soon as Bushnell introduces this model in 8x, I'll buy those too.

I was completely happy with how these performed on the 2 days birding. Friends with much more expensive pairs were also very impressed with the optics and performance in low light. I would highly recommend them as a budget friendly, high quality pair of compact binocs.
